The Current Challenge: A Legacy at Risk
More than a century after she created her extraordinary body of work, a deep divide has emerged within the Swedish foundation charged with protecting it. Two court cases are now underway in Sweden to resolve these concerns and determine how Hilma's legacy will be protected moving forward.
On one side of the legal battle is the af Klint family — committed to preserving Hilma's collection as a unified whole, in alignment with her spiritual and non-commercial purpose. On the other are board members accused of acting for personal financial gain, in conflict with the Foundation's founding mission.
Legal proceedings addressing these issues are now underway in Sweden, with one case currently before the County Board and another set to be heard in 2026 at the Stockholm District Court.

What is at stake?
The integrity and unity of The Paintings for the Temple and the broader collection
Like chapters in a book, each painting has its place in the sequence. Board members' attempts to sell individual works would break the intended order and scramble the intended message.
The Swedish Foundation's commitment to Hilma's non-commercial purpose
Since its establishment in 1972, the Foundation's express purpose has been to preserve and share Hilma's work in alignment with her non-commercial vision — not to treat it as a market commodity.
Maintaining transparency and oversight
Every action the Swedish Foundation takes should follow proper review and accountability.
